A Waterloo single-mom set up a web site to track local environmental concerns from construction sites.  If she saw an oil spill, she'd photograph it and put it on the web.  Then one of the construction companies sued her for $2 Million in libel.  This is a sad case of where American laws are better than Canadian laws.  In the US she'd be covered under Anti-SLAPP, which protects independent people from being silenced by corporate lawyers merely by crushing legal fees.

Well, in yesterday's paper I saw she settled out of court (unable to disclose the details) and made a formal apology that the spills she detailed were not made by the company that sued her.

I dunno, if there's a spill on a construction site, how could it not be liable?

I read that too.  She had to remove her old web page and in it's place put the apology.  Someone from the ministry of the enviroment should have investigated at least.  Oil spills are an environmental hazard and can take a lot of money to clean up.  Samples should have been taken and tested, if their was oil, then the company Activa, should have been held responsible, but nothing was done.

I remember reading on her site (before it was shut down) that the ministry actually congratulated her on a job well done, and that she was providing a valuable service since they couldn't be everywhere at once.

I guess we see how well those words of support hold up now, eh?

Sounds like their words don't hold up at all.
