Found an article today on CBC news (http://www.cbc.ca/news/viewpoint/vp_burman/2008/01/is_canadian_a_racist_slur.html) that illustrates that the term "canadian" has been a code word in the states to denote various groups, including black americans, as far back as the 80's.  Interesting read.
