I just replied about the Hobbit movies under the "transformers" discussion and released it really belonged here.. ah well. To follow up with something Diddly might be interested in... the director I mentioend, Guillermo del Toro, will be directing a Dr Strange movie as well.. not that THAT is of interest to Diddly.. but what is possibly is that Neil Gaiman is signed up to write the script (he also did Stardust and the recent iteration of Beowulf).
Ok so in addition to all the super heroes movies that are due out (apparently Brad Pitt is in talks now to play Thor) there is talks about bringing some really cool sci-fi/fantasy books to the silver screen too.
Dan Simmon's Hyperion Cantos is slated to be running in 2010 (though it has no details posted yet, a page has been created on IMDB). Also in the online article I read it said that Terry Brook's Shanara series is being considered for the big screen too. It would be interesting to see an adaptation of either of these... Diddly who do you think should play the Shrike?
The Shrike has to be played by Freddy Mercury, who's cadaver is puppeted by Frank Oz (of course). Anything else would be a waste of film.
No, seriously, does it matter? The Shrike had zero speaking parts, and was just a big spiny monster. He'd probably end up being mostly CG.
I don't think Hyperion/Endymion would translate well to the screen. Maybe Endymion, but you'd really lose something without spending sufficient time building up the mythos.
Shannara, however, would make fantastic money at the box office, if done well. It's a very classic story. You have an unwilling hero, and wise mentor, and a scary villian bent on destroying everything. Hero must retrieve object of unspeakable power and/or take it somewhere unbelievably difficult to save the world. Lather rinse repeat. All they have to change is the main character, who just ends up being a descendant of a previous movie's hero. They could film ten of them simultaneously and just release them every few months. It'd be like printing money!
One thing I never quite understood... Why do so many fictional villains want to destroy everything? How can they enjoy their victory if the world is dead?

Why is the demolition stage of a home renovation the most fun?
Also, usually they bad guys have some sort of fascination or obsession with chaos.. they kinda get off on things being not what normal people would like... also, who would tell a tale where the "villian" loved rainbows, unicorns and fields of daffodils.. that's never a good way to make everyone sympathetic to your "good" cause, right?
