A 3-part BBC documentary came out recently entitled "Earth - The Climate Wars". I really felt this was a fantastic "play-by-play" history of how Science vs Skeptics has occurred since scientists first feared global environmental catastrophe back in the 50's. It fairly examines the scientific evidence and arguments against it. At first I wasn't even sure if the show was promoting Climate Change, or deflating it!
Did you know that initially scientists thought we were actually heading into an ice age? The pollutants being expelled into the air actually had a cooling effect and for a few years reflected the sun's heat more than greenhouse effect could retain. Over time, however, the balance shifted as more carbon dioxide increased the greenhouse effect and we started warming up. As scientists changed their song from "immanent Ice Age" to "unbearable Heat Wave", people had to wonder why they should believe them now.
This is the kind of balance offered in this documentary. It admits where science got it wrong, and equally demonstrates where science has been proven correct. Every argument against Climate Change and taking action is addressed in a fair manner, starting with the implied assumption "Let's assume the skeptics are right..." and then ends up disproving the argument.
Yes, Global Warming is real. Scientists have been warning governments since the 60's. Even the governments' own think-tanks have agreed. Predictions based on current models have been observed as "bang on" accurate. But the situation is getting worse, and things are starting to occur at a faster rate than we expect, and history has shown the climate can catastrophically change within a single year once critical mass occurs.
Sorry, I gave away the ending there.. but if you have any care for the state of the planet, for you and your children, you'll want to watch this series. |
