Playstation Home, the online community software that Sony has had in development for several years, has finally been released to the entire Playstation user base.  http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/7777122.stm  I've played around in the closed beta for a couple hours.  It had lots of potential.  There was a movie theater, video screens all over, bowling and arcade.  Looks like they've added a bunch of stuff for the full version too, like a flying game I'm looking forward to trying.

This article has a very candid review of Home.  I'm inclined to agree with everything this guy said.  http://www.giantbomb.com/news/open-house/662/

Penny Arcade did a comic about Playstation Home.  Succinctly accurate!  http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2008/12/12/   If you want a more in depth view from the comic creator, check out his written review http://www.penny-arcade.com/2008/12/12/

I have a feeling crapping on Playstation Home will be the new fad...

So I've tried out the Red Bull Air Race in Playstation Home.  It took me longer to figure out how to get on a plane than to actually race one.  It's all time trial, so you don't actually race other players.  I'm curious if the planes flying overhead as you walk around are real racers, or just put there for effect.
The goal is to fly your plane through checkpoint rings, which is pretty straightforward.  The hard part is doing it as fast as you can.  To keep it difficult, some rings have a "ghost" image of the plane in the middle.  You have to match the angle of the plane as you pass through the ring!  I still can't match anything other than perfectly horizontal.  You'll know by the sound effect if you got it or not.
Although this addition doesn't save Home from overall dullness, it opens the door for more sponsor based games for Home denizens to play.
In the weeks since it's launch, Home has really thinned out.  I went to check out the arcade machines and they were mostly empty.  I could actually play a couple games!  I wonder if Sony will continue to add content and loosen up a bit on the sterility, or if they will ultimate drop it as a failed experiment.
