Many thought the appearance of Seven of Nine in a skin tight body suit was just a ratings grab for Star Trek Voyager.  Apparently, researchers have discovered that wearing a skin tight body suit will actually help prevent astronauts from losing bone density in space!  http://www.popsci.com/technolo.....mpression-astronauts
I'm sure the producers instinctively knew this and had no ulterior motives.

I never thought it was an attention grab... It was a wholesome attempt to show the human side of the borg....

Yah there was all sorts of grabbing going on and I'm sure most of the people doing it did not hope it would garner any attention...  I would think the bone density issue might require something a little more solid that spandex though??

Like what?  Popsicle sticks?  It doesn't have to be very 'strong' in order to exert pressure on the human skeletal system.  Human bones rely on pressure to repair and strengthen themselves, without that they atrophy same as muscles.

More info than I knew... but along that line, wouldn't something more constrictive than spandex (which is super stretchy and doesn't offer much in the line of pressure) be more effective - say a wetsuit, or some some sort of body-fitting protective clothing (such as body armour or something?)?

I would imagine they're trying to balance out the effect on the bones with the effect on the user's mobility.

Okay, so my initial idea of a solid 10 foot thick rectangle of lead with an exact cutout of the astronaut's body inside is likely not the best idea then..., but how about a wetsuit-style suit.. that should do the trick, n'est pas?
