Microsoft has ended mainstream support for Windows 7 this month.  You will still get security updates until January 2020, but for now, you're encouraged to "upgrade" to Windows 8. http://notebooks.com/2015/01/17/windows-7-support-ends-4-things-know/

Personally, I recommend jumping to OS X or Linux if you have the option.

Update (Jan21): Microsoft just announced that it will make Windows 10 a free upgrade for anyone currently running 7 or 8.  This upgrade will be made available "sometime" in 2015.  http://gizmodo.com/windows-10-is-a-free-upgrade-for-the-first-year-1680771504

Officially, no.  Unofficially, yes.  Lifehacker has an always up-to-date guide on how to build a "hackintosh" (a PC running OS X).  http://lifehacker.com/the-always-up-to-date-guide-to-building-a-hackintosh-o-5841604

Quoted Text
Building a hackintosh—that is, installing Mac OS X on non-Apple hardware—used to require extremely restricted hardware choices and quite a bit of know-how. Now your options are vast and the installation process is fairly simple.

I've been running OS X on my Dell Inspiron Mini since 2008.  Coincidentally, I just played Warcraft on it last night for a little bit.

A free Windows 10 upgrade? on my older pc is that a wise move? Have they streamed down windows 10 compared to 7? With those reservations aside, seems like it may be an alternative.

It'll only upgrade from Windows 7 and 8.  If your old PC runs XP you won't be able to get 10 for free.

If you're thinking of upgrading to Windows 10, there will be several different flavours:  Home, Pro, Mobile, Enterprise, Mobile Enterprise, Education, and IoT (Internet of Things).  http://blogs.windows.com/bloggingwindows/2015/05/13/introducing-windows-10-editions/

Windows 10 is coming out July 29th, and a notice to reserve your free copy will be appearing with updates to applicable systems running 7 or higher.  http://blogs.windows.com/bloggingwindows/2015/06/01/hello-world-windows-10-available-on-july-29/

Apparently you'll have to look at that Windows 10 icon in your system tray until the new OS actually rolls out.  It's part of a critical update that Windows installs for you.
