When Marvel created the Ultimate Universe, they did a lot of things right.  Things like making Nick Fury into Samuel L. Jackson, or creating a new origin for the Fantastic Four.  I really liked the new story, and this year's Fantastic Four movie borrows heavily from it.

Young Reed Richards builds a trans-dimensional teleporter in his parent's garage, with his new friend Ben Grimm (who in the comics keeps the bullies off Reed), and tests it by teleporting toys.  Susan and her (foster) brother Johnny work with their Dad, Dr. Franklin Storm, on a similar project.  In the comics, they wonder how these kids toys keep showing up in the other dimension they're observing.  Eventually the group assembles and years later the foursome are the first humans to teleport there.  Because of an accident they gain their powers.

The movie almost got it right.  Unfortunately they made the same mistake as the previous FF movies... they felt the need to give Doom powers.  So of course Victor Von Doom has to be part of the experiment and get whacky powers of his own.  Sorry, Doom is cool because he's like the evil Iron Man.  His BRAIN and determination is his power.  It saddens me when they turn him into a caricature, a token "bad guy" who wants to destroy earth just cuz.

In this movie, Doom's power is apparently to make the movie suck.  Until his emergence, this is actually a pretty good movie.  I'd say about the first 3/4 was quite enjoyable.  If they had left Doom completely OUT of the movie, and just made the government the antagonist (as was being set up) it would've been a fantastic reboot for the franchise.  Seriously, save Doom for a sequel.  The potential for a dramatic super hero movie was there, but squandered by trying to raise the stakes.

The Good: The first 3/4 of the movie, borrowed heavily from Ultimate FF origin.  Great potential for Reed vs. The Gov't (and Sue, Ben, and Johnny)
The Bad: Awesome setup dropped so hard it hurts.  Also, put some pants on The Thing please.
The Ugly: WTF *is* Doom's power?

If they had spent more time on Reed's solo efforts, of trying to help his friends even though they were trying to capture him for the government, and then once caught reveal the government had no intention of curing them (cuz hey, cool powered soldiers!), THAT would've made a great film.  The team would fight for their freedom, and thus bond over their shared plight.
