Rexweather to become Web2Rex! (From Laurent)

"Here is the 'scoop' on what is coming next:

I am currently working on a version called "Web2Rex" that extends the capabilities of what RWeather 1.0 is (was) doing. So far, below is what is working and tested today (but not released yet):

EN=english, FR=french

1 - News :

a) 10 Top World News - EN (Yahoo.com)
b) 10 Top Tech News - EN (Yahoo,com)
c) 10 Top Sport News - EN (Yahoo.com)
d) 10 Top World News - FR (Yahoo.fr)
d) 10 Top Football/Soccer News - FR (Yahoo.fr)

2 - Weather:

a) 10 forecast days, any city in USA - EN (weather.com)
a) 5 forecast days, any city in Europe - FR (yahoo.fr)

3 - Email:

Just the very begining.

Rigth now I working on the possibility to add several Area Codes (as suggested) and several news categories instead of just one per web icon. As soon as this is finished (and after few days of testing) I will release a Web2Rex 1.0 version.

But because all this is based on web pages (yahoo, etc) that can change/be restructure, I am also thinking about a future version where you can customize everything and even download any webpage you want (hum, let's say almost everything...).

If I can not (or don't have time) to do all that, I will just make a basic mechanism and leave the version "as is" with source code to the public domain (so that it can be maintained/improved and available freely to everyone).

So much much more is coming ..."

Italian REX 6000 source uncovered. (From Fabrizio)

"I've found some REX6000 in Italy in the cash&carry chain called CDC (www.cdcpoint.it). I've bought six (for me and my friends!), but it seems they still have some. They also sell REX3000 at $2 !!!"

I would like to confirm that the above (from your website) is absolutely correct and to thank the source [John]. I rang and spoke to the very pleasant Sue at Battery Master. She is today express posting me 20 Panasonic CR2016s for A$1.00 each plus $7.00 p&h - plus GST of course. Sue says the batteries have a shelf life of about 5 years which suits me fine since I use a pair every 3 months at A$4.95 each - until now. Sue welcomes any and all customers - give her some support Aussies."

Updated Piano add-in available. (From Ugg)

"Greetings fellow REX users...

I am releasing version 0.9 of my REX Piano addin. This version has all of the keys "tuned" to their proper pitches (or as close as the REX will allow). See the link on my web page for more info about the REX sound hardware and it's limitations. (Link provided by Benjamin Green.)

With the release of 0.9, I'm also releasing the source code. It's a bit messy, but it's all there. All I ask is that you send me (or make public) any changes you make! Thanks!

I am still developing version 1.0 of the Piano addin, which will include: playing saved melodies from memos (very close to finishing this) and "sliding" notes (touch a note then slide to the next)."

RWeather 1.01 update to fix bug. (From Laurent)

"Sorry, I found a big bug so here is the version 1.01 of RWeather with:

  1. A fixed bug on the choice of the first tag to parse the HTML web page of www.weather.com (resulting in download failure error message).
  2. An updated weather icon
  3. Also available now: parameters are saved into "RWeather.ini" file"

Fixed broken BMP2REX link.

Thanks to those who pointed it out - the BMP2REX link is now working.

RWeather for weather forecasts for your REX. (From Laurent)

Lauren's has developed an application to help you get weather information to your REX. His solution relies on VREXNET to direct the sync of the XML file to your REX. See here on our Web Sync page for more information on VREXNET.

"RWeather 1.0 is a freeware application that retreives weather forecast information from the Internet (the source is www.weather.com) an save that into a small XML web page for REX6000 (you need to use VREXNET on local to download that). You can also change the weather icon (by using the freeware BMP2REX for example)and also the template to display the weather forecast. All important information are mentionned in the "readme.txt"."

Update to RexReader add-in - v. 1.3 released. (From Peter)

"RexReader V1.3 is out with the following changes:

- Links to other memos can now be directly tapped
- PIN keyboard is shown for locked memos before viewing
- Back button goes to last read memo if linked memo or entered memo is not found
- Database read bug fixed (some memos could not be opened by my code)
- User Interface and key assignment changed (should be stable now, the enter button leaves the addin)"

REX 6000 still available in England. (From David)

"Following from the info from Annaka, I can confirm that most of the retailers on Tottenham Court Road still have Rex6000 USB in stock, priced from £129 to £179 - you MUST haggle, most will go down to about £115 but keep going and you'll pick it up for £100 inc. VAT!

REX case option - how to "Palm" your REX. (From David)

For those who'd like to carry just a bit more than their REX, a Palm can be turned into an excellent home for your REX:

"Also have found a really good carrying case - the Datasuit for PalmV - has a clear plastic window where you can insert the Rex and still use the buttons and touch screen. Also storage for stylus, bits of paper, small notepad etc... and it's water resistant when zipped up. Perfect!"

Dataslim2 source identified. (From Melody)

"I have found value price of Dataslim2 bundle with USB card reader on the web. http://www.rakuten.co.jp/shopjima/111464/119478/. May be this is the lowest price which I have heard!?"

Good news for Groupwise users. (From TC)

TC has uncovered a plug-in for Groupwise that allows seamless sync of Groupwise data via Outlook - no exporting or other manual moving of data reqiured. If you are using Groupwise 5.5 and have access to Outlook, this may be just what you need:

"I read your rex-pages with interest and like to give you some information about synchronizing the Rex with GroupWise, my favourite groupware.

There is a free plugin for Outlook from novell (see Novell webpage at downloads). After Installing you can easily access your Groupwise message store with Outlook and have full calendering-, email-, task-, notes-funktonality and so on. Only the extended funktions like document management are not available.

In other words you can use Outlook as interface for GroupWise. By this you also have an easy way to synchronize the Rex with GroupWise because you can synchronize it with Outlook using the existing Software for the Rex.

During the synchronization you don t have to open Outlook and the GroupWise client can be used beside Outlook.

Hope this helps other users."

The Groupwise 5.5 plugin TC refers to is listed on this page on the Novell site as:

27 Jun 2000 gw55ol2.exe 3654K GroupWise 5.5 Plug-In for MS Outlook

There is more information on this plug-in on our Sync Options page - click on Groupwise.

New developer tools to help create REX icons. (From Laurent)

"I made a small tool for the REX users/developpers called BMP2REX.

The main purpose of this tool was first for me to generate REX bitmaps/icons that can be inserted directly into a XML page (to be Synch after with).

There's a "readme.txt" for more info in the attached zip file. BMP2REX uses "convbmp.exe" and "MMencode.exe" provided in the zip too. I don't plan to maintain it (so far). If it's found usefull and/or needs to be improved I can provide the source code (in Visual C++)."

Strange USB success with Windows XP.

It seems unlikely that adding more memory to a PC would fix an install problem with the USB cradle, but in the interest of sharing information . . .

"I have had some trouble installing my USB Cradle in Windows XP. Windows XP detects the cradle and seems to install the new drivers correctly (the cradle beeped and the green light went on). Windows now wants to install the serial to USB converter. At the end of the installation wizard the computer reboots before the hardware is completely installed. Trying to install it again (Windows XP prompts every time I logged in) would cause a reboot.

Today, I installed an additional 128MB for a total of 256MB RAM--the USB cradle installed with no problems!"

For more on troubleshooting the USB cradle, see our Operating System page and the REX FAQ.

More Aussie battery sources. (From John)

"On the issue of batteries for the REX 6000. I'm form Melbourne Australia and had been paying around AU$4.50 each. I have since discovered a source (details below) of Panasonic CR2016's at AU$1.00:

Battery Master
993 North Rd (factory 32)
Murrumbeena
Vic
Ph 03 9563 8460
Fax 03 9579 4844"

Update to cMemo released. (From Chris)

"I have posted cMemo version 0.4, which fixes three bugs in version 0.3; see readme for details. I have been unable to resolve one other very intermittent bug which results in a cMemo error code being displayed (but NOT a Rex crash). If you see this in version 0.4, let me know.

Also, please be aware that, due to a limitation of the flash memory logic, the first time you run cMemo 0.4 you should launch it from the Extras page, not from Adder. After that, it may be run from Adder or Extras."

REX 6000 in Singapore. (From Sascha)

"I just had a stopover in Singapore and found that the Electronics shops at Changi Airport (they're all owned bei Weitnauer Electronics) have at least 20 REX6000s in total for around 200 Singapore Dollars.

Just thought that someone from that area may be interested. I don't know if they can ship them to customers."

Update on Radio Shack batter prices. (From Kevin)

"I just ordered 50 batteries from Radio Shack for $33.50. The unit price per 25 order is now 16.75 with free shipping (67cents a battery).

I guess the advantage with Radio Shack is that you can call 1-800-THE-SHACK, engage in secure transaction, and know that they are reputable and reliable."

See our Battery Vendors page for more information on finding good prices on the CR2016 batteries used in the REX. The page contains information on both the price and the storage capacity of batteries you can purchase for your REX - both matter!

Minesweeper add-in available - translated from Japanese. (From Daniel)

Daniel (of Rexdk fame) has been hard at work on a new toy for all of us:

"Hi all, I have converted and translated the Mines addin to work with the rex. The addin was originally written for the DS2 by Citizien and is a Minesweeper-like game. Have fun, Daniel http://rexdk.webhop.net."
