Let's face it. Twitter is done. Elon Musk has killed it by laying off half the employees (https://www.reuters.com/technology/twitter-start-layoffs-friday-morning-internal-email-2022-11-04/), banning remote work (https://gizmodo.com/elon-musk-bans-remote-work-twitter-1849766493), adding a monthly subscription cost (https://www.cbsnews.com/news/twitter-announces-blue-check-subscription-service-monthly-fee/), and even considering putting content behind a paywall (https://gizmodo.com/elon-musk-twitter-paywall-genius-idiot-nazis-tom-fitton-1849756014).
Twitter users are looking for a new home, and many of them are flocking to Mastodon (https://joinmastodon.org/). This is a distributed social media that's been around for several years, and lets you host your own server (https://joinmastodon.org/servers). Darkshade (https://darkshade.social) even has an instance!
It's like twitter, but tweets are called toots (following the elephant theme) and accounts are named @user@server. You can follow me @diddly@darkshade.social

It really seems Musk is trying to kill Twitter completely. Now he's demanding the remaining employees to work long hours at high intensity or be fired (https://www.bbc.com/news/business-63648505). After also firing employees on Twitter (https://www.cnn.com/2022/11/15/tech/elon-musk-twitter-employees/index.html) for daring to correct false statements, he's not inspiring any loyalty.

While it has been fun running a Mastodon-like server, I've decided to take darkshade.social down. I tried moving the instance to another machine, but I'm stuck running Pleroma, and that's a convoluted mess to migrate. It was really only used by me anyway. If you're looking for me now, I've moved to diddly@sunny.garden
