Okay, last post for awhile.

The last part of Taer Prison Isle Quest.
Once you enter the Underworld level 2, you face 2 locked doors. Open either door and your key is removed from your inventory. Either door will close and lock behind you, but there is a lever inside each door to open it from inside.
What you are looking for on this level are Taer Prison portal Crystals (red item) and Taer portal activation Crystals (blue item). The red crystals only work on Taer Prison Isle and take you back to the Prison upper level (and saves you a very long walk back). The blue crystal actuates a currently inert portal found in the lower left had corner of the Underworld Level 2 map. The red ones appear randomly on different monsters in this area. The blue ones ONLY appear on the body of a Morhg, keep killing Morghs untill you find one. Walk near the portal with a crystal in your inventory and the portal will trigger. Prep then enter the portal, and you will face another of Larad's underlings. Defeat it and take all the items. Don't rest here, enter the next portal that appears and this takes you to Larad's Lair.
You'll face more of the same enemies as level 2, Demonflesh Golems, Admantium Golems plus at least 2 Dracoliches. Fight them or slip past using Greater Sanctuary, and find your way down to Larad's last underling. After you kill her take the key from her body and rest then prep and enter and face Larad.
When fighting Larad, keep a close eye on your hit points, use a potion of heal whenever you hit points get down near 1/2. His key will only open one treasure chest, (none have I ever found to have epic items). The real treasure is the Dreamcatcher Longsword ( sells for about 13 million GPs, and the Book of Blades,Biting Bashing).

If you have red crystals, use one and teleport out to the upper prison level then exit the Island.

I hope all this helps with a really obscure quest that is difficult to complete, but has some very worthwhile rewards.

Maybe some one else will pick up this thread.
Take care everyone.

Just a quick note about my style of play. I'm not saying my way is the only way or the best way to play Rhun. But it's what works for me.

There are only 2 builds I play NWN 1.69 and EE. Cleric/wizard/Pale Master 17/3/20. The cleric build I have taken through the Original NWN Campaign, and Hordes of the Underdark. It is a solid build but it's very dependent on buffing spells (which can be interrupted during combat whwn surrounded by monsters or when facing a boss monster.

The cleric build is a good starter build (Domains of Magic and Trickery. He gains Mage armor and Divine might at level 1, at level 3 he gains 3 invisibility spells at level 3,Dark Fire at level 5, Stone skin at level 7 and Improved Invisibility at level 9. These are Domain spells, so you can cast with no penalty while wearing armor with a shield.

The Fighter build works best in Rhun, for gaining Devastating  Critical hits, some Boss Monsters are immune to Critical Hits, some aren't. The Pale master provides an Ac bonus of +2 at level 1 and at every 4th level (4,8,12,16,20) +12 to your armor is a great survivability boost. at level 10 Pale masters gain Immunity to Critical Hits (including Devastating Crits and Sneak attacks). Check the manual for the requirements for Pale Master. Taking at least 1 Wizard level gives you access to All the Arcane spells for sale in the Magic shops. My usual progression is Fighter (or Cleric) to level 7, Wizard to level 3 then Pale Master 1 level, then back to fighter to level 17, then Pale Master to level 20.

Some players just don their armor grab a weapon and clomp down the road, trail or dungeon hallway fight every monster that gets in the way. I prefer to fight my battles that are important with good items and high XP yields. If will take you a very long time to do any of the epic/high level quests and areas if you just "soldier through".
The best spell for traveling through around monsters is Greater Sanctuary. Often a monster will spot you and move toward you but it can't directly you. It can however cast area affect spells like earthquake or Storm of Vengeance.

I'll try to post the second part of finding your way to Larad'a lair (of course there is a trick to it. It's easy to do once you know it.) this weekend.

I hope all this helps.

Here is the first part of finding the Underworld and Larad.
Note: you'll face some very difficult monsters in the Underworld. Some of the quest rewards you gain from doing the mini-quests in Etum are priceless. One is the Jewel of Well Being (Mass Healing 1x per day) I usually carry about 8 of them. They work like a area of mass destruction to undead. While undead can save out of it, Use another and you'll tag them. It takes them to near death so one hit will kill them. You should have either items or spells to protect against Death Magic. You will face demiliches, Dracoliches and other powerful undead. Once on Taer Prison Isle, none of your teleport items will work so stock up before you start.

From the Taer Portal stone, head south, take the middle exit and stay on the east(left) side of the map, keep moving south through several areas exit at Taer Oasis. head east to Taer prison dock. The boat there only takes you back to Etum. Take the area transition at the end of the pier to Taer Prison Isle.

Enter the Prison building in front of you, find your way around the hallway you'll see a central area with two rooms with a stairway leading down. This takes you down to the Prison complex proper. Here where it gets tricky. What you're looking for is a stone grate that leads down. There is an area script that places that stone grate in one of 8 different locations, if you go back up the stairs and come back down it can remain in the same place or appear in one of the other 7. If you hit tab or mouse over it , it will highlight blue. Sometimes it is in the warehouse area, you have to go up the stairs, exit the prison and go up and over to get to the warehouse...then it can have moved again...In the large area in upper left of the map. you'll find a map in a barrel which helps finding your way around.Just keep going up and down the stairs and keep looking for the grate.

Once you find your way down to the Catacombs, fight or sneak your way past Geletanous Cubes and Cursed Undead to a portal that takes you to the Upper level of the Underworld.
You can rest where you arrive in the Underworld in the lower left corner of the entry area. In this area you'll find Azer, Larad Soldiers\guards Demi-liches, Harpies, Admantium Golems, Bodaks and Larad's underling Vertigen Domax. He is undead so use a jewel on him. He hold the key to the underworld, plus the excellent longsword 'The Sword of the Storm" A +10 weapon that does electrical damage and has other useful effects. Find the stairs down in the upper left area of the map...Now you ready for level 2 of the Underworld.

To be continued in Part 2.

-Alaric

An edit note; I forgot to mention that Domax also can appear in one of 8 locations on this level. Sometimes near the demi-liches...sometimes in a hallway or side rooms. Besides protection from death magic you should be protected from fear. The cloak you gain from the werewolf mini-quest, or dragon slippers work.

Thanks for the feedback diddly. I use Fastone Image Viewer, but I also have several versions of Corel PaintShop Pro.

The images were taken using Creator in Dungeon Master Mode the Creator function.

Larad is a VERY tough boss monster. The deck is really stacked against the player, Note: His combined levels makes him a level 60 monster, AC 66, HP 1235, Challenge Rating CR) of 131. He has a slew of damage resistances both inherent and from an awesome helmet named "The Hells Helmet.
He is immune to critical hits, the Helm gives him +5 Soak 30 Damage Resistance 50% immunity to Divine Energy and Positive Energy, 90% resistance to Fire.
He carries the Dreamcatcher a +13 LongSword That does high Vampiric Regeneration and is Strength Draining. I never even attempt to battle him untill I'm level 40 with Epic Weapons\armor\items with an Armor class of 80-90 and about 50 heal potions. You just have to outlast him. Like most if not all of the Rhun Boss monsters, he can only heal 3 times, get him to near death the 3rd time he goes down for good.
On his body you'll find Dreamcatcher and the very valuable Book of Blades, Biting, Bashing which gives players various high types of temporary damage (fire, Holy Weapon etc..)to their weapon. Extremely rarely you'll also find that Hells Helm on his body...probably 5% chance. I've never found it though.

You'll also find a key to one of his treasure chests. I've never found other than +3 or +4 items in any of them.

Well, I'll attach the screenshots to the next reply (The file is too large yet), and hopefully write the first part of how to even get to the Under World where Larad rules. I'll probably write it off line and attach it later tonight or tomorrow.

Well, got the screen shots for the longsword, and I also took a couple of one of my favorite Boss monsters in the mod. Larad from the Taer Prison quest. Since NWN saves screenshots as targa files which can be very large, I need to convert them them then crop edit them for size, then I'll compress them and upload them this Sunday. I'll also detail how to get to the Underworld where Larad rules...a very tricky area to reach. After hearing about this quest from other players after 4 or 5 fruitless searches, I finally stumbled onto how to get there. Then comes the greater issue how to fight your way to him, then finally kill him.
I also need to go back and edit an earlier post where I said Larad was an Undead Bard. He's actually a Demon Bard.
Well, 111 views of this thread so far, some feedback would be nice.

Well met again. It's been awhile since I posted here, part of the time I've been held captive by Baldur's Gate 3 and Solasta: Crown of the Magister, 2 new D&D 5th Edition rules CRPGs. They are okay and have some nice features, but D&D 3rd Edition like NWN 1.69 and Nwn:EE are so much better imo. The EE looks and runs smooth as silk now, and Rhun is still my favorite mod/server.

Just an observation from years of playing on various servers: If more players don't utilize the Darkshade Server, it will most likely go away. The server host provides it for free but they usually have out of pocket expenses for bandwidth etc..
I'll try to post at least every two weeks on the forum here. I want to post some screenshots of some of the more unusual items, creatures and locations in the game. This weekend features "The Mysterious Longsword of Peppo" An interesting weapon.

If you have questions about certain areas of the mod, ask them here and I'll try to get back to you in a day or so. I've also enabled the link to email me, just put RHUN in your subject line.

It can be difficult to find a decent weapon in the mid range (between +3 and +8). They are mostly random finds, but there are areas where better weapons can be found. Any of the major Drow Houses (fighting the priestesses) can often yield higher level weapons depending on your level. A good place to find +6,+7 and +8 weapons\armor and items is in the catacombs of Stralad. Starting around level 11 or so you'll face Warrior Mummies and mummies along with an intellect devourer creeping along in the hallways. A great place to build up cash or locate some useful items. Buy a lesser amulet of health at the jewelry\gem shop in Etum to protect against mummy disease and the numerous poison traps in the sarcophagi in the rooms. Gain the cloak from slaying the werewolf on the Moors of Stralad to protect from fear (or dragon slippers which will also protect against the mummies knockdown. Leave the crypts\coffins in the hallways alone, looting them will move your alignment to evil. The Lich in the upper right is very tough, you should avoid him until you are in your high 20s or 30s level.

For a truly great set of armor (have to be good or neutral) can be found by doing the Defiled Chapel quest in Stralad city. There are some tough battles to gain it but it's well worth it. Mid to high 20s level can do it, depends on items\AC and weapons.Speak to the "Angel" in the lobby to start the quest. You should have high Discipline or Dragon slippers when battling in the Defiled Chapel, the Chapel Guards and Defiled Nuns have knockdown.Very good xps in this area.

I encourage everyone to really explore the module, many chests\weapon racks\even area boss monsters can carry a random chance of holding a high level or even an epic level item. For example, the Frost Giant King Reyonce some times has a helm with a deflection bonus of +10 along with the mini-quest item he normally carries.

I do ask the powers that be (the server host) to please reset the mod\server weekly using the base mod. Resetting from a saved game causes some scripts to get wonky...you can get stuck on Gegnars ship, some encounters don't trigger. Once the vendors start having 7 or 8 pages of items, or someone has been running around the Underdark invised or under greater sanctuary can generate huge lag on the server from all the Drow defender spawns.

There really is no real need to save your server game...if you are doing the epic quests, your "quest stage" will be saved, but you will have to find your way back to where you left off after the server resets.

I hope you are enjoying the mod, and thanks to the hosts for providing the server for us to play on.

Some more info for players:

When doing the mini-quests, if you die and go to the void, you lose any quest items in your inventory. Luckily this doesn't happen with either of the 2 epic quests or the epic weapon quest. You have to gather multiple items to meet/complete quest stages and goals and it is very easy to die.

There is a script flaw in the epic quest to find and defeat the Dreadlord (Tanzantor's Quest) where the party/player needs to collect 2 admantium bars, make sure you only have 2 in your inventory.

In the second epic quest (The Lady of the Moon's Quest), you'll have to converse with a mad wizard "Zolad". The party leader will need a persuade ability of 15 or so, ask him about magic rocks (not magic stones). If you find the Armor of Command or the Greater Helm of Persuasion duing the game hang on to them, they boost persuade +6 each which stacks, so put 3 or more points into the persuade skill.

When adventuring in the Underdark you'll probably come across Drow weapons, items with the descriptions and signs written in Drow. Since I often played a Drow character people would ask me to translate the text for them. If this interests you, take a screen shot of the item or sign, go offline and google Drow to Common Translator. The website "The Chosen of Eilistraee" seems to be the one Shayan used to write them. It works best to enter one word at a time.

The modders packed alot into this game, and I think they got burned out on the project. It's still a great mod to explore.

Hope all this is useful.

Roleplaying / Playing the Subraces
« on: August 26, 2020, 10:14:12 AM »
I can tell by the way some of the quest givers and other NPCs are not in their normal place, that some players playing some of the Subraces have found out the hard way that entering Etum, Desert Springs or Glacial Hills will discover that the entire populace is hostile to you and you'll be attacked on sight. It's probably best to leave off playing most of the Subraces (Drow,Dark-Elf, Vampire,Lich any of the evil Subraces) untill one becomes fairly familiar with the Rhun mod. Some of the Subraces can be played with no problem like Avariel Elf,Aquatic Elf etc.. with no problems, one can join guilds, do the mini-quests do the major quests whereas the Drow, Dark-elf, Vamps,Liches and Duegar (maybe Werecat also) can't join Guilds of do the quests. This makes it very hard to raise a character.

There is one way around this using an exploit/bug in the module. Here is how it works:

Since all the citizens of The civilized towns are hostile to many of the Subraces, before one enters Etum unready your weapon (get used to doing that every time you enter Etum or the villages. Cast Greater Sanctuary (preferred), or Invis/Improved Invis on your self (using a scroll or item), enter Etum in the Rural area avoiding all Npcs. Enter the back door of the Brass Dragon Tavern and look for a Dark Elf named Belor Lue'feyn standing next to the wall by the staircase. Choose the conversation option about being in trouble with the law and he'll offer to "fix" things with the authorities (cost depends on your level, can be several thousand GPs). Once you pay him, most of the citizens, guards and quest givers will become neutral toward you and you can use the shops, do the mini-quests etc. However, Drow,Dark-Elf Vamps and Liches should stay out of ALL the Guilds, they will remain hostile to you.
There are 2 Paladins near the Paladins Guild in North Etum that will attack you if they see you, also the mage Liger in Glacial Hills. To be safe, always travel in the civilized areas under Greater Sanctuary.

Belor was never intended for this use, he is a holdover from the original World of Rhun mod, put there so players could remove criminal status (if caught lockpicking doors or chests or pickpocketing npcs etc.. I discovered it by accident, and while I probably wasn't the first to discover it, I was the first to post about on the GA Server Forum and detail it's uses.

Note that any time the Server resets or you die and go to the void, you must go see Belor again and pay the fee to travel safely in Etum again.

One last note: The last thing you want to do is kill an Etum citizen or guard. Every one will turn against you, and VERY SOON a "Rhun Magistrate" will spawn in. They are unkillable, unstopable and relentless and will follow you to the ends of Rhun to take you in custody. Teleporting away, logging off and logging back on several days later and they still spawn in and continue the chase, I'm pretty sure they persist even after server reset. Once killed and captured by the Rhun Magistrate, you are taken to Etum Prison Isle and sentenced by a Judge to serve time in a cell (real time approx 10 minutes), then released in your small-clothes with 100 GPS. All your items are stripped...everything. I knew level 40 characters that lost all their neato-peato epic items by making that mistake.

Like I said, you should probably wait until you get very familiar with Rhun mod before trying the Subraces.

Hope this info helps.

Roleplaying / Quests in Rhun
« on: August 18, 2020, 12:17:06 AM »
I'll touch lightly on some of the major quests and difficult areas in Rhun.

The "Epic" quests: There are 2 epic quests (according to the Rhun Modding Team). The first main quest sets you on the path to face a very powerful, ancient and evil being and his minions. It will take you across many areas of Rhun and other planar areas. 4-6 players level 40 and loaded for bear...in some areas your teleport items won't work, so you can't jump out and go restock on healing potions. Lord Vaude will set you on the path to this quest when you are of the proper level.

The second main quest (more properly "The Lady of the Moon's Quest") will take you across various areas of Rhun, but all paths lead to the dreaded Underdark and the domain of the Drow. 3-4 players level 38-40 (again loaded for bear, i.e. epic level armor/weapons and items). Guard Captain Siger (patrols in from of Kedylath Temple will set you on the path of this quest.

The quest to gain access to epic items is epic in itself. Can be done solo level 38-40 +8 weapon or better. The Taer Overseer in The Desert will inform you of the required steps.

The Duegar Caverns are an especially difficult area. Most of the Duegar weapons have "Magebuster (TM)" technology, so spells and buffs will not do you much good. Like many of the dangerous areas including the epic quests, It's been my experience that there is simply no substitute for high hit-points, a high armor class and a high attack bonus.

There is one more area I'll mention that should be ranked as epic...facing 3 Dracoliches at once, amongst other foes should be counted as epic :).
It's the Taer Prison Isle Quest. It's very difficult to solve this quest, just finding your way down is a pain. I don't think there is a quest giver (It was the original main quest in Djerv Ter's World of Rhun mod.) You'll face an Undead Bard as well as some of his sub-bosses. Can be done solo, level 40 with epic items/weapons etc..if in a group once you find your way in and kill him, wait and let him respawn for each member. He has 2 awesome items, a +13 Longsword (The Dreamcatcher) and a book that allows any class to cast a variety of damage enhancements on their weapon.

In some of these quests, notably the 2 epic quests, you probably won't be able to do them with an evil alignment party leader. Having evil members in your party may cause a quest stage to fail since some quest stage NPCs are hostile to evils, Drow, Vampires and many of the sub-races.

One final bit of knowledge: Most of the boss monsters can only heal 3 times...so, get them down to near death that 4th time, and they will go down. So can be tagged by Devastating Critical, but some are immune to it.

Hope this info helps.

Some more info for players. Some spoilerish details are listed below, if you don't want spoilers don't read further.

For more general info on Rhun, go to neverwintervault.org and enter Rhun in the search area. There are 4 that apply to the Rhun mod; click on Persistant World of Rhun. along with the mod files Shayan (he created the Subrace Engine the Underdark and quite a few other areas) compiled 2 PDF books. 1 about Rhun and Etum, and 1 about the Underdark that gives the back-story about how the Drow came to the caverns under Rhun, and the origins of their war with the Moonelves if you're interested. You'll also find the map posted elsewhere on the Darkshade forum, as well as an Excell spreadsheet that lists all the mini-quest givers and the Gold/XP and reward item for each quest.

If you haven't already done the mini-quest for Roim Angermitt, look for her in front of the Etum Capital building or inside the Church of Miradoc. you'll gain a Belt of Drunken Courage. That belt sells for big bucks, my fighter's guild store pays over 500,000 gps fpr it...the Paladin store pays 350,000. Many servers tone that cash amount down to 100,000 thats still a huge chunk of cash for a level 4 character (the earliest level you should try it solo).

The other thing I'll touch on is the Desert Island of Taer. The only reason low level characters should go outside of the village of Desert Springs is to gain the portal stone for Taer. Characters should wait untill at least mid 20's level before adventuring there. If you are low level use invis potions or spell scrolls, it's better to use a scroll of Greater Sanctuary though. I NEVER travel outside of Etum or any of the safe spots like villages unless invised or under GS. Don't use them both together btw, for some weird reason they cancel each other. The icons show next to your character portrait, but monsters see you normally.

Taer is critical because in Taer is where you'll find the Quest to gain access to The Ancient City of Taer and the Emporium that sells epic weapons, armor and items.

There are 2 ways to get to Taer (Village of Desert Springs). If the player or the party is good or neutral, go to Saral Shoreline, and enter the Dragon cave (I've forgotten it's name) The Silver Dragon in there will offer to fly you to Rhun for free.

The other way is to enter the wizard's tower in the Hagar swamp south Etum , just north of where Gegnar's ship is moored at Saral Shoreline. Speak to the statue in front of the tower, it will ask you if you know the wizard's name. Type "Hjalmar" (without the quotation marks) in the talk/conversation box then press enter. The statue will say "You may now enter"...it usually takes several minutes for the door to open, but it will open. This is the only way for evil and/or subraces like Vampires, Drow Werecats etc..to get to Taer. In the middle of the tower going up you'll find a room with a portal that takes you the Wizard's tower in Desert Springs. Speak to the wizard there to buy a map of Taer for 2,500 gold pieces then visit all the spots in Desert springs. You'll find an armor shop with some of the best armor you can buy in the game until you gain access to the epic store. The potion wagon\shop has some very useful potions, stoneskin, greater stoneskin, potions of dragon breath, etc..

I never attempt that epic weapon unless I'm at least level 36-40 equipped with a weapon +8 or better.

I hope all this helps.

Thanks for the feedback. I know Rhun doesn't provide much guidance about what to do and where to go. I'll try to keep from posting any major spoilers, as I know many players want to discover most things for themselves. Lucky for me I played on the Game Arena server that had many long term players including some of the Aussie Rhun modding team, so I was able to consult a large knowledge base. There are some really tricky parts concerning many areas. If you see me in the game, send me a tell and I'll help if I can.

Roleplaying / Re: Rhun

Just some info for players new to Rhun. All the classes have their own guilds. The guild will have a shopkeeper and a guild-master and usually several NPC members hanging around. The guild-master will give the PC a quest to complete in order to join. After completing the quest you'll receive your guild teleport item. You can have more than one guild membership/teleport item. There are no guilds for any of the prestige classes however. Since item level restrictions are built into the game, make sure you buy a "stone of appraisal" before you leave. You can only use the stone on items in your inventory. not in a merchants inventory or in a bag of holding.

Out the south gate is the new player area, most players stop going there once they reach level 3. It leaves too many higher level spawns/number of monsters for a level 1 character that enters it later. There is an extensive portal system in the mod. Scattered around Rhun are 9 obelisks, once you touch them, you'll receive a portal stone to return there. Collect all nine portal stones and speak to the quest giver at the back entrance to the mage's guild. He'll trade you a very usefull item that combines all the stones, plus grants haste and mass haste 3 times per day.

In Etum you'll see the citizens walking about. Citizens standing in one spot are mini-quest givers. In the original World of Rhun mod, those quest givers could be found in one of 6 locations scattered all over Etum. Luckily in this version of the mod the quest givers only appear in one of 2 locations. Those quest give players gold and/or xp awards plus often some very useful items. One can also shift your alignment with these quests so be aware of what answer you choose. Some places to look for quest givers if the aren't where you saw them before are In Lord Vaude's castle including both wings on the main floor, in the inns and taverns including upstairs the Etum capital building, in some of the guild houses, standing on balconies etc..

I guess Iv'e rambled on enough for one post. I'll leave you with this tip.

This only works for Paladins btw. Once a Paladin joins the Guild, speak to the Smithy (he's near the shopkeeper in the guild). He'll offer to enchant your weapon, for the hefty fee of 1 million gold pieces. It's not all that hard to gather really, and you won't be able to use it until level 10. Have your weapon in hand and pay him the gold. If you had a +1 longsword, it is still labeled +1 longsword, but it has the Holy Avenger property applied. In the hands of a Paladin this is a +5 weapon doing +5 slashing damage, +5 attack bonus and 1d8 Divine damage to evil foes. I've only tried it with a longsword, not sure if it works with other weapons but I imagine it does.

Well met all. I was so happy to see a server hosting Rhun. I first started playing it back in 2004, and it's the best sandbox world MPlayer mod ever made. I just saw two players on earlier, and I'm glad the server is showing signs of life. While I'm no expert on Rhun, I have become fairly familiar with it. It took me pestering many other players with questions, and a lot of hard earned knowledge (and dying) to learn many of it's quirks. It seems like I learn something new about it every time I play. I often play a Drow character, it is a challenge, but it can can be done. Just wanted to say hello, I hope to see more players in the game.
